KAtch the kite empowering the youth

Scottie Barnes, the visionary behind the Katch The Kite program in Raleigh, N.C., is making a significant impact on the lives of young black men throughout the Triangle area. By having a dedication to fostering self-esteem and creating career opportunities for "At Risk", KTK provides mentorship, tutoring, and comprehensive support. Recognizing the numerous challenges that today’s youth encounter, Barnes and his team emphasize the importance of setting and achieving goals as a pathway to success. Their mission is clear: lower recidivism rates, curb gun violence, and combat substance abuse.

Reflecting back on 2024:

As the new year unfolds, Barnes took a moment to look back on the accomplishments of 2024. He highlighted the organization's expansion in partnerships with various nonprofits, notably the JLBC community alliance, that provides peer support and tutoring for teens involved with the juvenile system. Additionally, KTK remains committed to hosting Team Talk Tuesdays at the Tarboro Road community center in Raleigh, Nc, continuing this valuable initiative every other Tuesday.

Any goals for 2025?

“One of our visions for 2025 is to get us another location. We really miss having our own location. It was very convenient for the community and also for the youth a safe Haven music fun and also the kids can’t come in and practice for their recitals.”

New projects?

“Additionally, we are working on organizing a community peace march aimed at uniting all gang members as we walk together through the neighborhood in harmony,” said Scottie Barnes
